Adaptive stochastic weak approximation of degenerate parabolic equations of Kolmogorov type

چکیده
Degenerate parabolic equations of Kolmogorov type occur in many areas of analysis and applied mathematics. In their simplest form these equations were introduced by Kolmogorov in 1934 to describe the probability density of the positions and velocities of particles but the equations are also used as prototypes for evolution equations arising in the kinetic theory of gases. More recently equations of Kolmogorov type have also turned out to be relevant in option pricing in the setting of certain models for stochastic volatility and in the pricing of Asian options. The purpose of this paper is to numerically solve the Cauchy problem, for a general class of second order degenerate parabolic di¤erential operators of Kolmogorov type with variable coe¢ cients, using a posteriori error estimates and an algorithm for adaptive weak approximation of stochastic di¤erential equations. Furthermore, we show how to apply these results in the context of mathematical nance and option pricing. The approach outlined in this paper circumvents many of the problems confronted by any deterministic approach based on, for example, a nite-di¤erence discretization of the partial di¤erential equation in itself. These problems are caused by the fact that the natural setting for degenerate parabolic di¤erential operators of Kolmogorov type is that of a Lie group much more involved than the standard Euclidean Lie group of translations, the latter being relevant in the case of uniformly elliptic parabolic operators. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classi cation: 35K65, 60H07, 60H30, 65C05, 91B28.

APPROXIMATION OF STOCHASTIC PARABOLIC DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH TWO DIFFERENT FINITE DIFFERENCE SCHEMES
We focus on the use of two stable and accurate explicit finite difference schemes in order to approximate the solution of stochastic partial differential equations of It¨o type, in particular, parabolic equations. The main properties of these deterministic difference methods, i.e., convergence, consistency, and stability, are separately developed for the stochastic cases.
متن کاملForward – backward stochastic di erential equations with nonsmooth coe cients
Solvability of forward–backward stochastic di erential equations with nonsmooth coe cients is considered using the Four-Step Scheme and some approximation arguments. For the onedimensional case, the existence of an adapted solution is established for the equation which allows the di usion in the forward equation to be degenerate. As a byproduct, we obtain the existence of a viscosity solution t...
متن کاملOnWeak Convergence, Malliavin Calculus and Kolmogorov Equations in Infinite Dimensions
This thesis is focused around weak convergence analysis of approximations of stochastic evolution equations in Hilbert space. This is a class of problems, which is sufficiently challenging to motivate new theoretical developments in stochastic analysis. The first paper of the thesis further develops a known approach to weak convergence based on techniques from the Markov theory for the stochast...
متن کاملDissipative and Entropy Solutions to Non-isotropic Degenerate Parabolic Balance Laws
Abstract. We propose a new notion of weak solutions (dissipative solutions) for nonisotropic, degenerate, second order, quasi-linear parabolic equations. This class of solutions is an extension of the notion of dissipative solutions for scalar conservation laws introduced by L. C. Evans. We analyze the relationship between the notions of dissipative and entropy weak solutions for non-isotropic,...
متن کاملOn a class of degenerate parabolic equations of Kolmogorov type
We adapt the Levi’s parametrix method to prove existence, estimates and qualitative properties of a global fundamental solution to ultraparabolic partial differential equations of Kolmogorov type. Existence and uniqueness results for the Cauchy problem are also proved.
